TUTORIAL: Wings for Dragons by SammyTorres TUTORIAL: Wings for Dragons by SammyTorres
Here it is!
My tutorial on how to draw wings for dragons!
If there's anything I didn't bring up or if anything was incorrect please write it in the comments so everyone knows :D

As you might have noticed I used a lot of images that I could find on Google. I do NOT own any of these images and I'm sorry that I can't credit them :(

Here's some links that I found most useful:

:iconw0lle:

If you want more dragon artwork you can go to my group - DCP-Dragoncyclopedia and add it to your DeviantWATCH -->:icondcp-dragoncyclopedia:
I'll certainly post all my dragon related artwork there as well as other highly experienced artists like:

...and many more!

Hope to see you there (^_^)

Do you think this wing placement could work on Pegasi too?

Hello! I see you're still replying to comments here, so I have a question that's been bothering me for a while, I'd appreciate any help!
I often see this additional "finger" drawn growing out of the wing elbow. It always seems questionable to me, just like horns right between the jaws or big bulky spikes on knees/heels. Wouldn't a finger sticking out of the elbow mess with the joint's movement?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the elbow-finger as an actual movable digit. However, if artist like to draw their dragons with them then go nuts, dragons are fiction and therefore all kinds of depictions are welcome c:
From a realistic point of view this wouldn't be a popular theory if you're designing dragons in the upmost realistic vision... but, I mean, there's already so many crazy animals that we though never could exist but here they are so go have fun ^^

The tutorial is very neat and covers everything important. I see a lot of artwork ruined by horrible to non-existent anatomy, so thank you for making this!

Before I say anything, I would like to point out I find your tutorials extremely helpful, and very well put together. They are the best I've ever seen.

However, I must say I disagree on your bat-style dragon anatomy. Yes, bats have wings like that, but dragons do not. A dragon wing, in proportion to it's body, is much smaller than a bat wing in proportion to it's own body. Therefore, the wing of a dragon would have to be shaped much longer, especially near the middle "finger" and not so compact around that area.

Another thing to keep in mind is Dragon wings must be huge. Standard earth gravity can only withhold so much weight in one being. If the creature is too large, it will crush itself. So a dragon would at most be big enough so it's head is roughly the size of a minivan, to still be able to fly. And even then, the wings must be large to hold such an impressive weight in Dragon bones, dense muscle, and Dragon scales, and if there are enough, horns. A dragon is a complicated and huge creature, and cannot be simply compared to a bat, as the bat is a much simpler creature.

Thank you for the tutorial, I'll start practicing this and I'll soon have my own dragons to design, especially one that I want to draw.

amazing tutorial! happily added to my faves. I always cringe when I see the impossible or umbrella wings. One comic I read has the umbrella wings so it's very cringe worthy every time a winged character shows up. >_<

Awesome thank you. How do you determine wing size vs body ratio once the dragons get kaiju size?

if the wings are somewhat covering the whole body of the dragon (-the tail) I guess the size is secure. You can also make them a little extra big just in case. Rather too big than to small ;)
Actually if you choose small wings on purpose you can still make the dragon fly if you imagine it fly like a hummingbird - perhaps have two extra pair of wings?

Would it be cool for me to use the comparison of the bird, bat, pterrosaur, and human limb bones from their tutorial for a blog I'm writing talking about the evolution of flight? It's a very good representation and I didn't want to use it without your premission

I'm really glad I found this helpful tutorial.
I know wing anathomy from feathered ones since a while but membrane wings were just too difficult. Now I at least could do a sketch for my illustration that seems to fit pretty well (I'm not quite satisfied with the perspective in general, but that's just my general perfectionism I guess). I didn't really check the rest of your gallery or tutorials, but when I see the need to learn more about some stuff I guess I can find some good advice here (=

This tutorial is so amazingly helpful  Thank you for making all these!

I know that certain wing types serve certain purposes- speed, long distance, agility... Do you think there could be a wing type that would combine speed and long distance flying? I have a dragon character who's species is supposed to be very fast, but also able to fly long distances. Is that wishful thinking? XD

you know sparrows actually fly a loooooong way when they go south plus they're super agile so ye your dragon can definetly do both ;)
so sparrows and seagulls should be the best reference.

Oh my gosh, thank you, thank , thank you! I have the most trouble with wings, this is a life saver!

And what about dragons with multiple sets of wings? Like in HTTYD2, cloud jumper has two sets of wings, and I want your opinion on how I could do such a thing.

:iconsammytorres:
SammyTorres Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016  Professional Filmographer
Multiple winged dragons are super awesome but be carefull not to overdo them. Cloudjumper has his secondary wings almost sorta in his primary wing's armpits which for me is like hmmmm, not the best idea (but hey, it's a cartoon so ok)
I recommend you place the second wings a little behind the primary, give them space to move around.
Other than that just go for it, I mean it's an imaginary beast, you can draw it however you like it :)

I'm really sorry but I can't promise to look at them right now since I'm busy with other projects ;;n;;
I looked at your gallery real quick and it's amazing how colorful everything is and I really like your style! It's also difficult for me to critique you drawing since most of them are very stylized. I just think you should keep going and experiment when you feel like it ^^ ask your watchers to give you feedback or ask in the description :> best of luck, hun!

are the dragon wings always behind the front limps?
Reply
:iconsammytorres:
SammyTorres Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2015  Professional Filmographer
It's really up to you :) most dragon artists draw wings behind the front limbs but if you have a concept of placing the wings upfront just do that ^^ Something that's unpopular though it to place the wings on the frontlegs' scapula. No matter the construction of the skeleton, the wings should be independent from other limbs of the skeleton. :) Hope this helps!

Oh! So it could be placed everywhere but the importent thing is it isn't conecctet to another limb? do i get this right?
